Some Questions You Might Have About Purchasing

What is new jewelry? What is estate jewelry?
New jewelry is a piece of jewelry that has never been owned by an individual. This can either be a piece that is made as a stock piece by a jewelry manufacturer, a piece we can custom assemble from stock components for a unique piece or can have a piece completely custom created from the start specifically for you. Stock jewelry (whether we have the item in stock or order from a manufacturer) pieces are the least expensive new jewelry option.

Custom assembly of jewelry parts is slightly more expensive, but offers lots of options to make a piece specifically yours, but without the significantly higher cost of custom making the item from scratch. On the other hand, estate jewelry is previously worn and may come with some minor wear. The price of estate jewelry compared to new jewelry is far lower.

What is Karat vs Carat? How does the scale work?
A karat refers to the purity out of gold out of 24k. The K refers to the parts gold the piece is out of 24. For example, a 14k piece consists of 14 parts gold and 10 parts metal. Jewelry you’ll find in the U.S. is typically between 10k to 14k. European and Asian jewelry, however, can range from 18k to 24k.

A carat is the weight of the gemstone. One carat = 0.2 grams (or 0.007 ounces).

How should I clean my jewelry?
We suggest purchasing a jewelry cleaner at our store. If that isn’t an option, you may use a mild soap and a toothbrush to scrub the stones. Whether you’re using cleaner or soap, remember to rinse thoroughly to remove any soap residue.
What is an appraisal? Do I need one?
An appraisal is a written document detailing what you own.

Insurance Appraisal: The purpose of an insurance appraisal is to provide information and the maximum cost of replacing a piece of jewelry. You’ll only need an appraisal if you’re planning on insuring the item. Weigh the pros and cons — is the replacement cost greater than an insurance deductible?

Liquidation Appraisal: The purpose of a liquidation appraisal is to provide the liquidation value of the item. Liquidation value is the value at which a willing buyer would pay and a willing seller would sell the item for. Liquidation valuations are used primarily for setting divorces and estates.

What does gold filled mean?
Sometimes, the outer space of an item will be gold, but the inside is not. 1/20th 14K, 12K H.G.E. (Heavy Gold Electroplate), RGP (Rolled Gold Plate), GF (Gold Filled) indicates how thick the gold plating on the item is.
